Year-round camp offerings in the Arts District
In 2008 led by Pamela Penney, a group of several of the creative businesses in the Oak Park Arts District united to establish the first Children’s Art Camp in the Oak Park Arts District. Art Camp was incredibly successful with many children returning to the seasonal camps year after year. In the fall of 2014, Pamela Penney announced she was stepping down from her role as director in 2015. Pam has been the driving force behind the Art Camps, which is an incredibly complex program to coordinate. Members of the OPAD Art Camp community believe she has earned every single accolade bestowed upon her, and then some.
The OPADBA Board met to discuss various scenarios that would allow for the continuation of Art Camp without Pam at the helm. However, we are a completely volunteer based organization, with our own businesses to manage. The Board therefore decided that it was not able to oversee a program as complex as this and that Art Camp, as a program under the OPADBA umbrella, would not continue in 2015.
The Oak Park Arts District is filled with creative studios that, as their business model, offer children’s programming throughout the school year and summer. With this in mind, 2015 will bring several new and smaller “art camps” run by individual businesses and groups of businesses together so that the District can continue to meet the artistic needs of the community’s children. In the near future, this page will have information and links to all the children’s events available to your family on Harrison Street during the year.
We thank you Art Camp families for entrusting your children to us. Art Camp was just as valuable for the teachers and counselors as it was for your young artists. We welcome you and your children to continue to be a part of our creative family in the Oak Park Arts District. Stay tuned!
